Constructing the Landscape

A Gathering and Distillation

Draw, Paint, Print, Collage, Paint

Over the course of our three days together I will be encouraging you to build up a series of expressive drawings, paintings, prints and collages exploring the potential of the landscape surrounding the studio and your observed and felt place within it. We will be using a mixed media investigative approach using acrylic paints and inks alongside dry media drawing materials to encourage play and expressive responses.

Working both outside, immersed in the landscape, and back in the studio, you will be encouraged to respond, reflect and develop your own language of marks, shape, tone and colour. As a result you can expect to be going home with a stack of studies, gelli plate prints and mixed media collages along with final paintings and the seeds for a whole series alongside.

We will initially focus on gathering textures, patterns, colour, shape and line, which will act as a wonderful resource to inspire explorative gelli plate prints back in the studio.

The course will continue with the development of a series of exciting collages combining your drawing, prints and paintings. You can then choose to focus on developing your collages or use these as a springboard from which to create final paintings.

The course is taught through structured exercises to start you off each day, short demos of specific processes, reference to the work of relevant artists, and lots of individual and group feedback as you work.

The demonstrations each day will illustrate my personal mixed media approach and techniques, as I encourage a playful and immersive response, where the subject and materials come together to tempt you with their potential.

You can expect a full on sensory immersion into the landscape, the materials and your dialogue between them. This course is suitable for all levels of painters open to abstraction and experimentation.

Lunches and refreshments included. Days run from 10am to 4pm (ish)

About Janette

Janette, a member of the Lake Artists Society, is known for her expressive painting and joyful use of colour. Working from her studio overlooking Morecambe Bay, she is inspired by the light-filled landscapes of the South Lakes.

‘Taking inspiration from my estuary view I find myself responding to the shapes and colours as they move and morph throughout the day and the seasons. My aim is to develop sensuous and playful layers of fluid and manipulated paint that offer a sense of space while inviting you into my own colourfields.’

Janette has been delivering art tuition for over 20 years throughout the UK Europe and, since her successful online courses, worldwide. She is known for her generous and inspirational teaching in which she is happy to share her ideas and creative processes as they shift and expand to match her changing interests and personal focus. With Janette’s recent acrylic abstract landscapes she has embraced the unexpected ways the gelli plate print can open up new and exciting compositional ideas.
