I trained as an Interior Designer but the majority of my career has been solely in teaching Product Design, Textiles and Food Technology in secondary schools in Yorkshire.
Recently I have moved form York to near the Howardian Hills and have been busy renovating a cottage in Sheriff Hutton. The move itself prompted an increased awareness of my surroundings and a greater appreciation of the varying countryside of Yorkshire. The land and seascapes provide a source of inspiration for my work from the rolling hills of the East Riding to the rugged cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast.
I document my travels by taking photos and when I return to my studio I experiment with an ever increasing range of materials and resources. My work is predominantly textiles and fibre but I include papers, feathers, bark, natural wool and many found objects. For the majority of my work I use vintage and men's ties as my canvas. To me this adds a rich texture and colour as the foundation of my work. I build layers of fabrics and threads to give a depth to my work. When I am happy with the composition I blend the work by painting with my sewing machine where I use stitching to blend and colour the landscapes I produce.
My art work has been exhibited in local exhibitions and I have taken part in Staithes Arts and Heritage Festival and displayed work in two of the Coastival Exhibitions. I have been accepted as an emerging artist for North Yorkshire Open Studios 2017 and will be the Artist in Residence at Burton Agnes Hall in the summer.
