Experimenting with Pastel
Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th April 2018
Soft pastels are a fantastically versatile medium and offer all sorts of means of expression far beyond the conventional. In this 2 day workshop we will investigate how pastels can be used in a wide variety of ways in order to find a personal language. Working in the studio from sketches or from the immediate environment students will be encouraged to scrape, squash and push the medium beyond its usual limits. With plenty of accompanying demonstrations we will look at the processes of successful blending and colour mixing, using masks and use a variety of different materials to build up grounds on which to work.
Expressive Landscapes in Mixed Media
15th, 16th & 17th May 2018 : Fully Booked
11th, 12th & 13th September 2018 : Fully Booked
Drawing and painting the landscape today is as exciting and challenging as it has always been. In this three day exploratory workshop I will guide you through different ways of encountering and interpreting the experience of landscape though sketching and recording. There will be demonstrations in a variety of mixed media techniques that I use in my own practice, followed by plenty of opportunity to explore ways of developing your own responses. One day will be spent out in the open in the wonderful North Yorkshire Landscape (weather permitting) together with plenty of time for experimentation in the studio.
This course is open to all abilities but participants must be aware that it involves periods spent outdoors.

The Monochrome Landscape
Tuesday 16th to Thursday 18th October 2018
Monochrome landscapes can be as simple and subtle as a charcoal drawing but can be complex and multi-layered works of great depth and subtlety. They can refer to the space around us or the spaces we carry within us.
In this 3 day workshop we will spend time exploring the diversity of monochrome materials from humble pencils through to oil paint and other more unusual and unexpected materials.
Students will be encouraged to innovate and experiment with anything we can lay our hands on including drawing implements gleaned from the surrounding environment.
Inspiration will be taken from other contemporary and historical artists working in monochrome from Van Goch through John Virtue.
This course is open to all who have an open mind, a keen interest in mark making and texture and a willingness to explore
